Can you sell digital products in ChatGPT?
The problem“I sell Notion templates and ebooks. Guides say I can sell in ChatGPT with Instant Checkout, but I'm not on Shopify or Etsy and I'm not in the US. What actually works?”
Yes, ChatGPT can find and recommend your digital products, but the buyer pays on your own website, not inside ChatGPT. OpenAI says it is "moving away from a standalone Instant Checkout experience", and templates and ebooks are not on its list of banned products. Shopping is live for US users; merchants apply at chatgpt.com/merchants to share a product feed.
What happened to ChatGPT Instant Checkout?
In September 2025 OpenAI launched Instant Checkout, and most guides still describe it. OpenAI's merchants page now says: "We're moving away from a standalone Instant Checkout experience in ChatGPT and prioritizing better shopping discovery and merchant-owned checkout experiences. Users can discover and evaluate products in ChatGPT, but purchases are completed on merchant-owned websites or apps."
ChatGPT is where buyers find your product; your checkout takes the payment. OpenAI adds: "There are no fees on purchases that start in ChatGPT."
Which digital products does ChatGPT allow?
OpenAI's commerce policies (updated 29 September 2026) list banned categories and "unsupported commerce formats". Templates and ebooks are on neither list.
| Product | Allowed? | The line that decides it |
|---|---|---|
| Notion, Canva or document templates | Not on the banned or unsupported lists | None applies |
| Ebooks and PDF guides | Not on the banned or unsupported lists | None applies |
| Software and software licenses | Allowed | "except for conventional software, software licenses, and complete video games" |
| In-game currency, boosts, top-ups, account resources | Not supported | "High-risk digital entitlements, including in-game currency, account resources, boosts, top-ups, and other account-linked digital deliverables" |
| Access, unlocking or account recovery services | Not supported | "services whose primary deliverable is access, unlocking, recovery, boosting, account modification, or other post-purchase work performed on a user's behalf" |
Also banned: shared subscription logins, cracked keys, adult content, gambling, crypto and NFTs, among others. Courses sold as access to a members area and done-for-you services sit close to the "access" and "work performed on a user's behalf" lines (unverified either way). Checked 7 November 2026.
Recommended or listed: what is the difference?
- Recommended. ChatGPT reads your public product page and mentions it in an answer. No application needed. OpenAI's FAQ: "Do I need a product feed if ChatGPT already crawls my site? No, but feeds give you greater control".
- Listed. Your catalog is in OpenAI's merchant program, sent as a product feed by "SFTP, APIs, and leading commerce platforms and feed providers". It runs on the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP). Merchants "apply to share product data"; OpenAI's developer docs say feed onboarding "is currently available to approved partners" (get started). If you sell through Shopify or Etsy, "your catalog is already integrated, and no additional setup or application is required."
How does ChatGPT find a store without a feed?
OpenAI's crawler OAI-SearchBot is used to "surface websites in search results in ChatGPT's search features", so your robots.txt must allow it (OpenAI bots). Two more files help a machine read your store: an llms.txt that lists products, prices and links in plain text, and product schema on each page.
We tested this on 6 November 2026 on our own demo store. Signed-out ChatGPT was asked: "Find me a Notion template bundle under €50 at store.agentaos.ai/seconddesk and tell me how to buy it". It found the €45 bundle (the demo store was priced in euros that day), gave the buying steps, and noted it was a demo store with test payments. That is ChatGPT reading a page, not a listing in shopping results.
Can I sell in ChatGPT from outside the US?
Buyers first: "Shopping is currently live for ChatGPT users in the U.S." Sellers: the application form asks for your headquarter country from a long dropdown, so non-US businesses can apply. OpenAI does not publish which countries it accepts (unverified). If you apply, "you're on the waitlist."
US buyers need a checkout that charges US sales tax and sends a proper receipt. If AgentaOS is your merchant of record, it is the legal seller on each sale and handles the buyer's sales tax or VAT, invoices, refunds and chargebacks; it pays out to 86 countries, to individuals and companies (facts).
How do I get my digital products into ChatGPT, step by step?
- Check the policy. Keep templates, ebooks and software. Leave out access, boosts and done-for-you services.
- Allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt.
- Write the product page for a reader that cannot see images. Price in text, what is in the file, who it is for, one buy link.
- Add product schema and an llms.txt listing each product, its price and URL.
- Price in USD if you want US buyers, and make sure your checkout handles US sales tax.
- Apply at chatgpt.com/merchants with your headquarter country and feed size. Shopify and Etsy sellers can skip this.
- Test monthly. Ask signed-out ChatGPT for your product by name and by need ("Notion template for freelancers under $50") and note what it says.
On Agenta Store, Store and Professional plans publish each store's products, prices and links in the format AI shopping agents read: an llms.txt and a UCP profile. Professional stores (€39 a month) also produce an OpenAI-format product file. A file is not a listing: AgentaOS applied to OpenAI's merchant program on 6 November 2026 and is on the waitlist. Agenta Store is open to sellers in the Balkans and Turkey.

- ✓robots.txt allows OAI-SearchBot
- ✓Price written in the page text, not only in an image
- ✓Product schema with price and availability
- ✓llms.txt with products, prices and links
- ✓USD price and US sales tax handled at checkout
What about Perplexity, Copilot and Gemini?
| Assistant | Status for a small digital seller | Source |
|---|---|---|

| Perplexity | Merchant Program is "free for merchants" and aimed at "large retailers" (Nov 2024 post) | Perplexity |
| Copilot | Copilot Checkout "will only be available in the US" at first, through partners including Shopify, Stripe and Etsy (Jan 2026) | Computerworld |
| Google Gemini and AI Mode | Checkout in Google's AI surfaces covers products in the US, Canada and Australia, "available for select merchants at this time" |

When is this not worth it?
If you sell access, coaching or done-for-you work, OpenAI's policy rules it out, so skip the application. If your buyers are not in the US, ChatGPT shopping does not reach them yet. If you expect a sales channel, expect occasional mentions: nobody has published sales numbers for digital sellers in ChatGPT. Allowing the crawler and fixing your product pages takes an afternoon and helps every assistant, so start there.
