What is a RapidAPI alternative to sell API access?
The problem“I built an API and want developers to pay for it. RapidAPI keeps a big cut and pays only by PayPal, and PayPal cannot receive money in my country.”
A RapidAPI alternative to sell API access is your own checkout: the developer pays for a monthly plan or a credit pack, and your backend issues their API key when the payment webhook arrives. Rapid's own docs say it takes "a flat 25% marketplace fee" from 15 November 2025 and "only pays out API providers via PayPal", so providers where PayPal cannot receive, such as N. Macedonia, Pakistan or Nigeria, have no payout route. A merchant of record such as AgentaOS takes the card payment, handles the VAT and pays you to your own bank.
What does RapidAPI take from each sale?
25%, according to Rapid's current Payouts and Finance page (updated 6 November 2025): "Starting November 15th, 2025, our transaction fees will be updated" and "Rapid takes a flat 25% marketplace fee on all payments made through the API Hub." Its example: a $100 plan pays you $75. The fee "does not cover the fees associated with payouts processed through PayPal."
Rapid's docs disagree with themselves. The older v1.0 version of the same page still says "a flat 20% marketplace fee", and the worked example on the current page still pays $24 on $30 of sales, which is 20%. We quote the newer 25% notice. Check your provider dashboard before you decide.
The hub has also changed hands: Nokia acquired Rapid's technology assets, "including the world's largest API hub", in November 2024.
How does RapidAPI pay API providers?
Only by PayPal. The same page says: "Rapid currently only pays out API providers via PayPal. Unfortunately, we cannot accommodate other payout methods." Sales in one month are "processed for payment at the end of the following month", so January sales arrive "in the first week of March", minus the fee and PayPal's charges.
That fails where PayPal cannot receive money. In our check of 85 countries (6 October 2026), PayPal could not receive in 11, including N. Macedonia, Montenegro, Kosovo, Pakistan, Nigeria, Bangladesh and Turkey. A provider there can list an API on RapidAPI and never be paid.
What are the alternatives to RapidAPI for selling API access?
| Route | Who takes payment | Fee (verified only) | Pays out where PayPal can't? | Catch | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| RapidAPI (Nokia) | Rapid | 25% marketplace fee | No, PayPal only | Docs also still show 20%; paid about 5 weeks after month end | Rapid |
| API gateway billing (for example Zuplo) | You, through your own Stripe account | Not quoted (gateway plan plus Stripe fees) | Only where Stripe opens accounts, which excludes N. Macedonia and Pakistan | You need Stripe, and you are the seller for VAT | Zuplo |
| Your own Stripe checkout | You | See Stripe fees | Same Stripe limit | You handle VAT and invoices yourself | Stripe countries |
| Your own checkout via AgentaOS | AgentaOS, as the legal seller | 4.5% + €0.50 per card sale; 6.0% + €0.50 for cards issued outside the EEA; no monthly fee | Yes, to your own bank in EUR or USD, 86 countries | No marketplace traffic; you run the keys | Facts |
All checked 7 November 2026. On a €10 monthly plan with no tax, AgentaOS takes €0.95 (or €1.10 for a non-EEA card); 25% would be €2.50.
Who takes payment decides who handles VAT. Where AgentaOS is the legal seller, it adds the buyer's VAT or sales tax and issues the invoice (facts). Where the money goes to your own Stripe, you are the seller; read EU VAT when you sell from outside the EU.
Who issues the API key if I leave RapidAPI?
You do, in your own backend. AgentaOS sells the plan or credit pack, bills renewals and sends signed webhook events; it does not create API keys or count API calls. Your code reacts to the events (webhook events):
- `checkout.session.completed` or `subscription.created`: create the key, or add the credits.
- `subscription.renewed`: extend access to the new period end.
- `subscription.payment_failed`: ask the developer to update their card.
- `subscription.canceled`: revoke the key.
Two ways to price it. A monthly or yearly plan with a request quota you enforce (subscriptions). Or a one-time credit pack that tops up a balance your gateway counts down. Not sure which? Read credits or subscription.
How do I sell API access without RapidAPI, step by step?
- Pick the plans. For example a monthly plan with 50,000 calls and a yearly plan, or credit packs of fixed size.
- Create the products. In AgentaOS, go to Products, click New product, then Subscription with Monthly or Yearly, or One-time for a credit pack. One product per price (subscriptions).
- Attach the developer's account ID. Create the checkout from your server and put their user ID in `metadata`, so the webhook knows who paid (paywall guide).
- Register a webhook. Add your URL and verify the HMAC-SHA256 signature on every event (webhooks). Click Send test event to check it.
- Issue and revoke keys. Wire the four events above to your key table. Test the whole loop in test mode first (test mode).
- Publish pricing. Put the plans and their limits on your docs page, with the checkout button next to them.
- Get paid. Each sale clears for 14 days; payouts run on the 1st and the 15th to your bank in EUR or USD, and the first needs €50 or $50 available (payouts). In Pakistan and Nigeria you need a USD account; N. Macedonia takes EUR or USD.
Checklist: before you sell API access
- ✓Plans and quotas written down, one product per price
- ✓Checkout created server-side with the developer's ID in `metadata`
- ✓Webhook signature verified on every event
- ✓Key created on payment, extended on renewal, revoked on cancel
- ✓Quota or credit balance enforced in your gateway
- ✓Whole loop tested in test mode
- ✓EUR or USD account at your bank, and your accountant told about income from abroad
When is AgentaOS the wrong choice?
If RapidAPI's marketplace brings you most of your subscribers and PayPal pays you fine, the cut may be worth the traffic: AgentaOS brings no buyers. If you want calls billed in arrears per request, the AgentaOS docs describe monthly and yearly plans and one-time products, not metered usage billing. If you cannot write a webhook handler, you need a developer. New accounts start with 15% of each sale held for 120 days (facts).

What fee does RapidAPI take in 2026?
Rapid's current docs say "a flat 25% marketplace fee" on all API Hub payments, from 15 November 2025. An older version of the same page still says 20%, so check your provider dashboard.
How does RapidAPI pay API providers?
Only by PayPal. Rapid's docs say it "cannot accommodate other payout methods." A month's sales are paid at the end of the following month, minus the marketplace fee and PayPal's charges.
Can I sell API access if PayPal does not work in my country?
Yes, but not through RapidAPI. Sell plans on your own checkout through a merchant of record such as AgentaOS, which pays out to your bank in EUR or USD in 86 countries, including N. Macedonia, Pakistan and Nigeria.
Does AgentaOS issue API keys?
No. AgentaOS sells the plan or credit pack and sends signed webhook events. Your backend creates the key on checkout.session.completed, extends it on subscription.renewed and revokes it on subscription.canceled.
Should I sell my API as credits or a subscription?
A monthly or yearly plan with a quota suits steady users and gives predictable revenue. One-time credit packs suit spiky usage. With AgentaOS you can sell both; your gateway enforces the quota or counts down the credits.
